Abstract

Most of the radio spectrum is being exploited by commercial telecommunication services. In Europe, directives and many standards dealing with equipment electro- magnetic compatibility (EMC) and with human exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF) are threatening all other use of the radio spectrum. Shortcomings of the standards are discussed and compared with the actual electromagnetic environment. The standards are likely to slow down high frequency and microwave power applications. Recommendations are presented for improvement. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.
