Metastable crystal growth is common in metamorphic systems; petrographic textures need not show any evidence of non-equilibrium behaviour. The authors question whether reactions ever occur close to an equilibrium boundary. The necessity for P or T overstepping is also required by nucleation-rate theory. -R.A.H.
