Abstract

Argon and Krypton laser systems are the laser sources commonly used in ophthalmology for retinal photocoagulation procedures. However, they suffer from several ergonomic and economic drawbacks. In fact, ion lasers are expensive, bulky and relatively inefficient devices: the energy is generated by a relatively bulky gas-filled tube with short operating lifetime, high electrical energy consumption, and low electrical-to-optical conversion.
