Abstract

Focus on the sociological issues that prove revelatory of the various ways of getting married for children from primo-migrant families. The tensions that emerge between parents socialised to the standards of the culture of origin and children who are dually socialised, both with reference to the parental culture and the standards applicable in French society (especially that of « free choice of one's spouse ») are analysed. To situate these practices and find one's bearings in the various matrimonial forms present in contemporary society, a distinction can be made between romantic marriage, based on informed consent and arranged marriage that is conceived of as being a choice determined in the first instance by the parents that assumes the more or less implicit adhesion of the future spouses, and forced marriage that consecrates constraint imposed on one or even both of the spouses.
