The paper summarizes recently obtained results on mercury chalcogenides high temperature p-T diagrams 1)2) 3). Differential thermal analysis (D.T.A) was used to determine the melting curves and phase transitions of mercury chalcogenides at gas pressure up to 2 GPa. Melting as well as zinc blende (B3) -cinnabar (B9) transition temperatures and pressures of HgS, HgSe, HgTe were measured. The resulting p-T diagrams are presented and discussed. The topotactic interpretation of the zinc blende-cinnabar phase transformation is presented along with the results of elastic properties of zinc blende HgX, close to transition. The influence of Phillips bond ionitity factor 4) 5) on the stabilization of the cinnabar structure with pressure is discussed. © 1993 The Japan Society of Applied Physics.
