Abstract

The toponym 'benteng' is a name of a village in Kecamatan Pengaron, in Kalimantan Selatan. The toponym is suggested to be associated with the existence of the Dutch fortress 'Pengaron' which is recognized as the location of the initial outbreak of the Banjar or Barito War. This study aims to rediscover the original Pengaron fort area. This study uses inductive-descriptive methods and data collection techniques by surveys, excavations and interviews. The excavation yielded two brick structures that are parts of a house foundation. Besides the archaeological evidence of building structures that strengthen the relationship between the toponym and Pengaron fort, it is necessary to undertake a study on old archives or written resources that supports the strong relationship between both data.
