Abstract

The IPL 101-1 project "Landslide investigation and capacity building in Machu Picchu-Aguas Calientes area" promoted the establishment of the first international organization on landslides (the International Consortium on Landslides: ICL) and the first international scientific programme (the International Programme on Landslides: IPL). As well, it demonstrated that Earth Scientists could contribute to preserving Cultural Heritage sites. The scientific research results on landslide risk assessment for world heritage sites that attract many tourists and have a great economic effect could have a great social impact on the Society. This chapter describes such an impact of this project, as well outlining the landslides at Machu Picchu, Peru.
