Abstract

The negligence of drivers when carrying children on passenger vehicle occupants is a latent problem and it causes a lot of human losses. Due to the restraining children in rear seats instead of front seats reduces fatal injury risk by three-quarters for children up to age 3. The present research describes the development of an initial prototype using the User-Centered Design (UCD) development methodology and Digital Image Processing (DIP) to low level to identify people by detecting facial features. The aim of this prototype is to reduce the number of minor and lethal injuries that a child could have at the time of a vehicular accident. This initial prototype was evaluated by 30 drivers of which 14 were accompanied by a child. The results obtained from prototype specifications are composing of a visual-hearing alert which is activated when a child is detected on the passenger-seat and this indicates to change the child un a safe place.
