Abstract

Imparting education at all levels has always been a constraint because limited number of students can be accommodated in a class for teaching, paucity of adequate faculty and infrastructure even in an advanced city; thus, there is a need of alternate method, which can overcome such constraints. But now the time has come when the non-conventional method needs to be changed not only in the terms of pedagogy but also in the terms of catering it to the students. This system must be effective and meaningful in terms of learning. The new technologies in online education can greatly help in overcoming these constraints. The massive open online courses (MOOCs) are becoming popular and is serving higher education in many ways but for school education a variant BOOCs (blended or hybrid Open Online Education System) need to be developed. These courses also offer a reduction in environmental effect as compared to print-based online courses. This mode of education is eco-friendly in terms of saving trees, reduces travel, economies of scale in terms of utilization of the campus site and the elimination of energy consumption in students’ housing. In a survey conducted in National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) center located at two different parts of Delhi City, it was found that only 95% candidates have access to desktop, laptop, smart phones or tablet. It was surprising to note that 77% were having internet access. About 89% students have comfort with videos while only 11% would face difficulty without books. More than 55% students preferred videos in languages other than English while 24% were comfortable with videos in English. Finally, 56% of the students were comfortable with online assessment while 16% could not decide.
