All traditional cultures have some personification of the Divine Healer or miracle-working god. The ancient Greeks had Asclepius, the god of medicine. Whilst we are celebrating the rise of regenerative medicine over the past 30 years, the dream of regenerative miracles goes back at least 2000 years when Matthew wrote, “Jesus … said to them, “Go and report to John what you hear and see: the blind receive sight and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up⋯ “. Today many are putting their faith in the power of the stem cell to perform similar miracles. Is this faith well founded?.
