Abstract

Unlike many previous alliances, NATO is pledged to joint action not only in war, but also in peace, safeguarding the “freedom, common heritage and civilization of its peoples, founded on the principles of democracy, individual liberty and the rule of law.” Aging and technological progress is a particularly apt theme for NATO.
