Abstract

Simple and complex analytical models of root reinforcement and theassociated requirements and limitations are reviewed. Simple modelsinclude the limiting equilibrium solution and the cable and pilesolutions. The complex model is the finite element method (FEM).The simple models were used to analyze published data from laboratoryand in situ shear tests and pullout tests on soils reinforced withsynthetic materials and root systems. The models can be used forapproximations when the model requirements are met. The FEM was usedto simulate experiments and provided more detailed information. Theseresults provide insight on the failure mechanisms. This forms thebasis for suggestions on models to be used in stability analysisof slopes.
