This chapter describes the main highlights of a seven-year program that was devoted to researching various aspects of intorducing algebra to different groups of students by means of a technology-supported, functional approach. The software that was developed as part of the research programme was CARAPACE, a functional problem solving environment that includes three representations: algorithmic, tabular and graphic. The six studies that are snythesized were carried out with students in the q12-15 year age range and focused on the cognitive processes engged in while the students worked with each of the three functional respresentations. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the contributions of this functional approach to the initial learning of algebra.
