One of the major and exciting advances in biomedical optics is the application of spectroscopy to conventional white light endoscopy. Both elastic and inelastic spectroscopic methods may provide information about tissue microstructure and histology, hemoglobin content, and other molecular characteristics. Applications of spectroscopy include optical biopsy for in situ histological determination, flat dysplasia detection, and field carcinogenesis for risk stratification. Incorporation of these advances still requires pragmatic future development including larger trials to validate the technology, standardization of equipment, and investigation into cost, efficacy, and practicality.
