Abstract

The University of California, Merced, as a 10-year-old, public research university, had the opportunity to introduce a theoretical foundation for leadership development and civic engagement. Use of the social change model and skill training in sharing stories and public narratives helps elevate students’ leadership experience to a powerful opportunity to engage others in social change. Additionally, with a student population that is predominantly first-generation, and PELL-eligible, the integration of theory and practice creates an opportunity for students to develop a sense of civic responsibility and agency around social change at the University of California, Merced.
