Abstract

Elderly patients account for the majority of inpatient and ICU admissions. Although mortality is higher compared to younger patients, older patients who survive their ICU stay can have an excellent quality of life and functional status. With age come physiologic changes in the body that can alter treatment in an acute setting. In this chapter, we review the changes and treatment options for the most frequently encountered ICU complications.
