Abstract

A 19-year-old man presented to the adolescent infectious disease clinic after being diagnosed with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection 18 months before. In this case study, we demonstrate how barriers to engagement should be assessed and addressed through the provision of psychosocial services within the context of a comprehensive treatment plan. The capacity for ongoing engagement in care is deeply interconnected with exposure to social determinants risk factors. Therefore, these factors must be regularly assessed and addressed on an ongoing basis, including periods between medical appointments.
