Abstract

Avoidant restrictive intake disorder (ARFID) is an emergent eating disorder diagnosis that is described in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Health Disorders, 5th edition. Notably absent from this presentation is a fear of weight gain or body image distortion. Instead, there is a persistent eating or feeding disturbance resulting in energy deficit. This chapter outlines diagnostic criteria and provides detailed information for all providers with specific medical and nutritional evaluation considerations as well as suggested interventions.
