Abstract

In spite of its vast size and population (1.339 billion, National Bureau, 2011), during its long history China has always remained determined to be a unity. None of its rulers - including the emperors and the communist government of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) - have ever accepted that some parts of the country could or would leave the country’s political system.
