Abstract

In the past decade there has been a significant surge in e-government-related activity in India. This is most noticeable the way e-government has been conceptualized in India in terms of its expected outcomes and delivery model; and also the way the government has gone about implementing e-government at national and sub-national levels. New initiatives with regard to national policies, programmes and agencies involved in the implementation have been undertaken and many are in the pipeline. Also a significant place for the private sector has been carved out with increasing number of e-government projects being implemented under public private partnership modes. All these developments make the e-government scenario in India dynamic with progressively more number of stakeholders. At the same time and notwithstanding these developments, there are also many unique and formidable challenges that India faces with regard to e-government implementation. The chapter discusses the aforesaid issues with the objective of presenting a concise yet comprehensive summary of the state of art in e-government in India.
