Abstract

The design of the poster of the 50th IMO is an artist’s version of a map produced by the German mathematician, physicist, and astronomer Carl Friedrich Gauss in 1821. Gauss’ interests relate intrinsic properties of geometry with very practical aspects of numerical calculations and properties of land surveying.
