We report on the formation of fast, energetic Rydberg Hydrogen atoms in the ion impact dissociation of water molecules. The kinetic energies of the neutral atoms have been determined by position sensitive time of flight measurements. The energies of the fast neutral atoms are similar to those observed in extra-solar planets. These can also act as a source of low energy electrons, which play an important role in cellular damage in living systems. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
