Particle characterization comprises the measurement and the quantitative description of physical properties of dispersed particulate systems such as geometrical size, settling rate, optical properties but also of concentration, velocity, flowability. It deals on the one hand with single stationary or moving particles and on the other hand with the properties of a bulk material. After describing the main areas of particle characterization this study concentrates on optical methods such as image analysis, and light scattering techniques. A new instrument for diffraction pattern analysis and its theoretical background and an on-line photometric surface area analyzer finally is described.
