Abstract
The Malta Labour Party (MLP), called since 2008 the Labour Party (LP), was formed in 1921 as a moderate social democratic party, influenced by Catholicism (Briguglio, 2001). Most of its founding members were unionized workers, mainly from the dockyards (Zammit, 1984, p. 43), yet other organizations including clubs were invited to the party’s first constitutive meeting in 1921 (Chircop, 1991, pp. 7-8).
