Abstract

Dropping in on the Darwins wasn’t the done thing, not in the 1850s. Even the locals arranged their visits in advance, and the rest of the world had to plan ahead before travelling all the way to Down House, the ‘ugly’ flat-fronted pile just outside the Kentish village of Downe where the family had lived since 1842.
