This chapter reviews the relevant forensic literature and findings of a telephone survey of facilities in 5 states (California, Colorado, Connecticut, New York, and Wisconsin) on the inpatient treatment of offenders with mental disorders. The following topics are addressed in the review: the criminal justice system, models of service delivery (the forensic security hospital, prison psychiatric units), management and treatment (hospital system design, major mental disorders), the treatment process (patient issues, staff issues, staff conflict), and discharge planning and outcome (release issues; role of the court; security review boards: Oregon; outcome studies; impact of prison life).
