Abstract

Gösta Eliasson describes how uncertainty is addressed and managed for family physicians in Sweden who meet regularly in small groups called FQ groups, where “F” stands for the Swedish word for continuing professional development (CPD) and “Q” for quality development. Made up of 5–10 participating physicians, including the leader, FQ groups engage in structured, facilitated learning grounded in patient care experiences in the form of case reports and narratives. The chapter commences with an FQ group leader's description of his group, followed by an overview of key features including the rationale for the program's development, learning aids such as “study letters,” and group leader training. Dr. Eliasson comments on FQ groups' strengths (e.g., set-aside time for reflection) as well as on challenges (e.g., acknowledging clinical uncertainty within the group, leader training, encouraging clinicians to participate). In conclusion, the measurement of FQ group impact is discussed as important for programme survival at the national level.
