Raymond Aron had two disciples who spent most of their lives studying international relations and took him, as Pierre Hassner has written, as “their master in international relations and in intellectual hygiene."1 In these last years of my career, I want to tell Pierre how much I have owed him during the 47 years of our friendship and in particular how much his thoughts about the present state of the world have stimulated mine.
