Abstract

Purpose: Telepractice, although not new, is an innovative, rapidly evolving field. Accessible, secure, interactive, and effective are the main benefits of this online method of providing speech therapy services. While a trained clinician is well versed in providing clinical services, the process of establishing a private telepractice can be a daunting task. From setting up the business model, marketing plan, and record-keeping systems to choosing a video conference platform and learning the rules and regulations, this article aims to provide an introductory overview of the logistics and lay the groundwork to facilitate the process of setting up a private telepractice. Conclusion: While endorsed by the American Speech- Language-Hearing Association as an appropriate method of service delivery in 2005, public perception, lack of controlled, substantiated research proving the effectiveness of the telepractice model, and the general absence of insurance reimbursement for service are still obstacles in the growth of online speech therapy. Education and advocacy are needed to push this cause forward and fill in the gaps.
