According to Lighthill’s theory, one may distinguish sound sources in a free flow in terms of monopoles, dipoles, and quadrupoles [1]. The volume flow itself is irrelevant for monopole sound generation. It is the variation in time of the volume determined by the fluctuating mass flow, which generates sound.
