The challenges to conserving modern heritage have been well articulated over the last decades and this area of conservation has now become a distinct area of practice with a number of international and national organizations dedicated to the endeavor. However there remain many challenges. In response to these challenges, in 2012, the Getty Conservation Institute (GCI) launched the Conserving Modern Architecture Initiative (CMAI) with the goal of advancing the practice of conserving twentieth-century heritage through research and investigation, the development of practical conservation solutions, and the creation and distribution of information through training programs and publications.
