Abstract

Given that non-forest trees as trees outside forests are found in most rural landscapes and many agroforestry systems, we can limit ourselves for this chapter to the latter. We have taken over the definition that agroforestry is a dynamic, ecologically based, natural resource management system that, through the integration of trees on farms and in the agricultural landscape, diversifies and sustains production, enhancing social, economic and environmental benefits for land users at all levels (Bellefontaine et al. 2002). © 2010 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
