Abstract

This paper presents a new approach for the development of self-improving Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITSs) based on the Case-Based Reasoning technique. In addition, a knowledge acquisition system for pedagogical expertise is defined on the same basis. On the one hand, the proposal integrates a Case-Based Instructional Planner inside an existing ITS, provided it follows a planning approach, to enhance it with learning capabilities. Thus, the enhanced tutor couples the Case-Based Instructional Planner with a more conventional one in order to obtain a robust hybrid instructional planner. On the other hand, the knowledge acquisition system allows the teacher to create new instructional plans on his/her own, as well as supervise and modify the plans already generated and used by the tutor.
