Abstract

The name ``Theano'' was a popular name in antiquity.1 It is certain that there were at least two, and possibly more ancient women philosophers of that name who left written records of their views. And although ``Perictione'' was the name of Plato's mother, other authors of that name have been identified. Because there are sound philological reasons to distinguish at least two Theanos and two Perictiones those distinctions are preserved in this volume. While we cannot be certain whether the texts attributed to ``Theano II'' in this chapter ought to be attributed to one and the same person, we can be reasonably assured that this is not Theano of Crotona.
