Cognition refers to mental functions and mental processes involved in gathering information, organizing, and using knowledge, including understanding, aware-ness, perception, reasoning, and judgement. It is closely related to abstract con-cepts like the mind, intelligence, learning, and many others describing numerous capabilities of the human mind. The term is used to refer to mental functions like comprehension, reasoning, decision-making, planning and learning. Neurobiologi-cal correlates of cognitive processes such as attention, memory, and executive functions will be addressed in this chapter. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2010.
