Abstract

This paper presents a multicast ATM switch based on the Plane Interconnected Parallel Network (PIPN) which was proposed earlier. In order to convert the PIPN structure into a multicast ATM switch, input port buffers, internal input buffers, and resequencers are deployed. Moreover, to prevent packet loss in the internal stages, the backpressure mechanism is used. Copies of multicast packets are generated by using the recycling technique which employs multicast tree generation. The performance of the proposed multicast ATM switch is studied by simulations and the results are given in terms of throughput.
