Abstract

Background: Psoriasis and periodontal disease are autoinflammatory disorders with bidirectional association. They both have a qualitatively similar immunomodulatory cascade, cytokine profile and a recently described dysbiosis. Periodontitis is significantly more frequent in individuals with psoriasis and individual who suffer periodontitis have an increased risk to develop psoriasis. Different oral bacterial species in the periodontal pocket might play a role in the development of Psoriasis. Methodology: Mexican patients with plaque Psoriasis with periodontitis (PP) or periodontal Health (PH) were included. After signing the informed consent letter, oral examination was performed, and samples of the periodontal pocket were taken. Plaque samples were analyzed by a DNA-DNA checkerboard to characterize 40 species of periodontal microbiota. Objectives: The aim of this study was to characterize the periodontal micro-biota in Psoriasis patients with and without Periodontitis. Methods: Mexican patients with plaque Psoriasis with periodontitis (PP) or periodontal Health (PH) were included. After signing the informed consent letter, oral examination was performed, and samples of the periodontal pocket were taken. Plaque samples were analyzed by a DNA-DNA checkerboard to characterize 40 species of periodontal microbiota. Results: Fifteen patients with Psoriasis were included, 5 PP and 10 PH. The total bacterial counts of Porphyromonas gingivalis and Prevotella nigrescens were exclusively detected in PH. The proportions of bacterias in blue complex (Actinomyces) was higher in PP compared with PH (P < 0.001).
