Abstract

(from the chapter) The current chapter focuses on community prevention for adolescent substance abuse. First, we provide an overview of the different types of prevention programs and environmental strategies available for youth and discuss the prevalence of alcohol and drug use and consequences among this population. The chapter then focuses on factors that may contribute to both initiation and escalation of alcohol and drug use. We then discuss theories that ground community interventions and describe specific community-based prevention efforts that have been implemented across the United States. We also discuss the outcomes from these prevention efforts. We conclude by providing recommendations. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2015 APA, all rights reserved)
