Abstract

Health inequalities have been the subject of both research and policy attention for over 150 years in England and are currently experiencing unprecedented political and policy attention, already alluded to in Chapter 2. The purpose of this chapter is to describe the current policy agenda and development in research against this background. It is important to note that although there are many parallels between the experience of England and the other countries of the United Kingdom (UK), devolution increasingly means that there is a growing gulf in their social policies. For this reason, this chapter focuses on the policy response in England rather than the UK as a whole.
