Abstract

We have conducted a bat diversity study in La Albufera Natural Park (Majorca Island). We have verified the presence of a total of eleven different bat species within the protected area. In the framework of this study we have detected for the first time the presence of the Nathusius’ Pipistrelle (Pipistrellus nathusii), being the first record for the species in Majorca Island and the Balearic Archipelago. A single female of this species was measured, wing-punched and photographs of upper teeth were taken before releasing it to back up its taxonomic identification. This finding rises up to nineteen the number of bat species founded in the Balearic Archipelago and evidences the need to pay more attention and investment to this kind of work in order to achieve a complete estimate of the biodiversity of this group of mammals and promote realistic measures to guarantee its conservation.
