Over 50 species of mosquitoes were collected from five localities on the Purari River. Anopheles farauti, A. koliensis, and A. punctulatus are the three most important vectors of malaria in New Guinea. They are also efficient vectors of filariasis, as are Culex annulirostris, Mansonia uniformis, and Aedes kocki. Culex annulirostris is the vector of Murray Valley encephalitis and epidemic polyarthritis. Malaria and filariasis are already established diseases in the Purari area. This paper reports on the mosquitoes collected, their potential as disease vectors, and some possible effects of the establishment of the dam.-from Authors
