Abstract

A fuzzy pattern recognition method is proposed to assess the degree of mental fatigue. To find the relationship between mental fatigue and parameters of electroencephalogram (EEG), the wavelet packet analysis was used to extract basic rhythms from EEG in three states of mental fatigue. It was found that the EEG from frontal pole of brain presents significant distinction on basic rhythms. Selecting the relative power of basic rhythms as indices, the fuzzy pattern recognition model based on the membership degree was used to evaluate the degree of mental fatigue. Experimental results show that the mental fatigue assessment made by the fuzzy pattern recognition model is consistent with the objective reality. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.
