Hypertension and cardiovascular events continue to constitute the leading global diseases affecting around 20% of the world's population. Although there have been significant advances in the treatment and prevention of these diseases, important efforts are being made aiming at deciphering the outstanding issues in the areas of cardiovascular physiology and pathology, positively impacting the development of new strategies applied to the diagnosis and treatment of hypertension. In this search, many animal models of disease have been developed and are currently being employed, demonstrating a most valuable tool in understanding the biological bases of the disease. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.
