Quality enhancement of radar images is highly related to speckle noise reduction. There are plenty of such techniques that have been developed by different authors. However, a definitive method has not been already attained. Filtering methods are popular to reduce speckle noise. This paper introduces a new method based on filtering a smoothed local pseudo-Wigner distribution using a local Rényi entropy measure. Results are compared to other well-known noise reduction filtering methods for artificially degraded speckle images and real world image examples. Experimental results confirm that this method outperforms other classical speckle denoising methods. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.
