Abstract

Centralized data bases are coming to be viewed as slow, archaic, and expensive. The ultimate goal of users is data base interoperability - the heterogeneous distribution of data that can be managed, monitored, and maintained anywhere in the enterprise. Distributed data base implementation, however, is fraught with complexities and potential performance pitfalls. This paper shows how standards organizations have emerged to address those issues and influence distributed data base technology. Is standardization the answer to distributed data bases? In tackling this question, this paper makes it clear that true distributed data base computing lies in the distant future.
