This chapter reviews the nature of measurements and observations, scales of measurement, and sources of measurement error and how archaeologists can account for them. Particular emphasis is on precision, bias, and validity of measurements. It also introduces Quality Assurance and suggests some tools that archaeologists can use to protect the quality and validity of archaeological data.
