Abstract

The Bengal Famine, one of the world’s worst food disasters, occurred in 1943 in British-ruled India. An estimated 4 million people died of hunger that year in India. After gaining independence in 1947, it took India 20 years to realize necessity of food security and it started working on a Green Revolution in 1967. Using high-yield variety seeds, machines like tractors, irrigation facilities, pesticides, and good fertilizers resulted in a 30 percent increase in crop yield by 1979. Since then India has continuously expanded its farming areas, doubled crops on the existing farmland, and used more genetics-improved seeds.
