Pencils of plane curves and characteristic varieties

Abstract

We explore the relation between the positive dimensional irreducible components of the characteristic varieties of rank 1 local systems on a plane curve arrangement complement and the associated pencils of plane curves. We discuss from this point the minimal arrangements and the fibered complements introduced by Falk and Yuzvinsky in their recent paper [17].
