A discussion of the 'outer join' operation is presented together with a concrete proposal for supporting that operation in a relational data sublanguage such as SQL. A three-part proposal is presented and it is shown that all three components of the proposal are necessary if the operation is to be supported in full generality, and if that support is not to depart too radically from the style of the existing language.
