The synthesis of norsethite, BaMg(CO3)2, is the only known way to incorporate large stoichiometric amounts of magnesium into an anhydrous carbonate at earth-surface temperatures. The structure of norsethite is similar to that of dolomite, especially with respect to the bonding of the magnesium. Since the building of magnesite layers seems to be the main obstacle in the growth of dolomite it is inferred that dolomite may form at low temperatures according to the overall reaction:
